British Science Week

Date: 12th Mar 2024 @ 4:20pm

For British Science Week Year 5 were involved in a very special project called ‘Building Better Worlds’. This was through The Science and Engineering Education Research and Innovation Hub at Manchester University. For the project the pupils had to conduct an enquiry into the biodiversity within our school. Our key question was: ‘How does the type of ground surface affect the biodiversity?’ We began by looking at what biodiversity is and identifying different examples of it. Then we created quadrants to carry out our enquiry. We went outside onto the playground and the field and chose three different areas to identify the flora and fauna we found.  Our results showed that there were some areas of our school grounds that had more biodiversity than others.

The most exciting part of the project was that we were joined by two professionals who work in the STEM industry. Dan and Andy from Sweco came and supported us with our enquiry. They also told us all about their jobs as transport planners. The pupils had the chance to ask them lot of interesting questions and learn more about engineering.
