Science Investigation - Which substance is the best substrate for the yeast?

Date: 6th Oct 2017 @ 9:40am

In Science this week Year 6 carried out an investigation to see which substrate (food) is the best for yeast. We used bottles with water and a substrate and then attached a balloon filled with yeast to the bottle to then observe how much carbon dioxide was released; this would then show which was the best substrate.

We used salt, sugar, flour and just water.

Lots of children expected the reaction to be instant and we talked about how yeast is used in bread making and that bread is left to rise for a few hours.

We waited....and the results were...

Sugar was the best substrate.

Followed by flour, then just water, then salt.
