International School Award

We were successfully awarded the International School Award in September 2014, which recognises schools which have excelled in the area of international learning.

What is the British Council International School Award?

The Award is an internationally recognised accreditation, awarded to schools which forge

links with partners overseas and add an international dimension to the curriculum. Through

working on joint projects and adding international elements to lessons, pupils (and teachers)

are given a fresh perspective on the world and their place in it.

Taking part in the Award:

  •  links schools with others around the world
  •  teaches pupils about other countries and cultures
  •  prepares pupils for living and working in the global economy
  •  enhances teaching standards through sharing best practice and teaching methods
  •  leads to a new outwardly facing perspective and ethos for the school as a whole

Why are we an International School?

35 different languages are spoken at Abbott, proving that we are very much an international school with a rich and diverse culture.

Through the inclusion of an international focus at Abbott, we are able to offer to our children a range of experiences that will enhance their learning and raise awareness of their national and international identity.

The governors and staff recognise that

  • Global issues are an important part of our lives in a world where economies are increasingly interdependent and global communication is a daily reality.
  • The children at Abbott have access to the internet and an increased opportunity to travel and can follow news stories from around the world.

Therefore we need to:

  • develop curiosity about other cultures
  • provide an informed awareness of countries, cultures and languages other than our own
  • enable children to experience daily life in other countries
  • provide an added opportunity for the promotion of equal opportunities, racial equality and global Citizenship

“You demonstrate a sound grasp of the principles and mechanisms for embedding international learning into your curriculum. The work you have done so far and plan to do in the future all clearly point to your passion for and commitment to introducing and maintaining excellent practice right across the curriculum.”
